Lake County Criminal Court Records
Criminal court records in Lake County are District Court files. The Lake County District Court has original jurisdiction over criminal and traffic cases filed in the county, and the Lake County Attorney's Office prosecutes felonies, gross misdemeanors, misdemeanors, petty misdemeanors, ordinance violations, and juvenile matters. Once the prosecution files a complaint or other charging document, the court case record begins.
The case file is broader than the charge list. It may include the complaint, charge statute, charge level, plea, bail or bond conditions, omnibus hearing entries, pretrial orders, trial activity, sentencing order, probation conditions, restitution, and final disposition. For the narrower charge-focused path after arrest, use the Lake County arrest records and court charges page.

Search Lake County Criminal Court Records
Use MCRO Case Search for Lake County criminal court records. Search by case number when available. Name search can work for many public criminal cases, but MCRO terms warn that pending criminal, traffic, and petty misdemeanor cases without conviction may not return by defendant name.
- Open MCRO and accept the access terms.
- Select Name or Case Number. Use Case Number for pending cases when the file number is known.
- Set the court location to Lake County and choose Criminal as the case category when useful.
- Open the matching case and read the Case Details and Register of Actions.
- Request certified copies from Lake County Court Administration when a court-certified record is required.
The BCA search, MCRO, and Court Administration answer different questions. MCRO shows the court case when public and remotely available. BCA CHS gives public conviction history for 15 years after sentence completion and excludes arrest data, juvenile data, federal data, out-of-state data, and private or confidential material.
Lake County Criminal Case Stages
Lake County criminal court records show the path from filed accusation to outcome. The sequence can vary by charge level and case posture, but the docket often reflects key points such as initial appearance, Rule 8 hearing, omnibus hearing, pretrial, plea, trial, disposition, and sentencing.
Case flow: Charges Filed › Arraignment › Pretrial or Motions › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
| Stage | What the Record May Show |
|---|---|

| Plea or Trial | Guilty plea, not-guilty plea, trial setting, verdict, or dismissal entries. |
| Disposition and Sentencing | Final outcome, sentence, probation, fines, fees, restitution, jail time, or stayed sentence. |
What Lake County Criminal Records Show
Lake County criminal court records follow Minnesota MNCIS conventions. A case number normally includes the county number, case-type letters, year, and sequence. Observed Lake County examples include 38-CR-26-113 for a criminal case and 38-VB-21-1133 for a non-mandatory appearance citation case.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Case Number | The court file number used to search, request, and identify the criminal case. |
| Defendant | The accused person's name and public party role. |
| Charges | The filed accusation, statute, level, offense date, and charge status when public. |
| Plea | The formal response, such as guilty or not guilty, if recorded and public. |
| Hearings | Dates, hearing types, judicial officer, courtroom or remote hearing location. |
| Disposition | The outcome of each charge or case, such as conviction, dismissal, acquittal, or other result. |
| Sentence | Jail, probation, fines, restitution, payment plan, conditions, or stayed terms when public. |
Lake County Charges vs Convictions
A filed charge is an accusation. A conviction is an outcome after a guilty plea, guilty verdict, or other conviction entry. MCRO terms caution that the case type can identify a more serious offense than the final level of sentence, so the Register of Actions and disposition fields matter.
| Point | Charge | Conviction |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | The prosecutor's filed accusation. | The court outcome after plea or verdict. |
| Can change | May be amended, reduced, dropped, or dismissed. | Can later be appealed, corrected, sealed, or expunged when law allows. |
| Where to verify | Complaint, charge list, and docket entries. | Disposition, sentencing order, and BCA public conviction data when applicable. |

Sealed vs Expunged Criminal Records
Minnesota Judicial Branch material defines expungement as sealing a court record so it is not available to the public. It does not destroy the record. Some Minnesota records are eligible for automatic Clean Slate sealing, while others require a petition under Minnesota expungement law.
| Point | Sealed | Expunged |
|---|---|---|
| Public visibility | Hidden from the general public by law or court order. | Sealed from public view through the expungement process. |
| Record status | Still exists in court or agency systems. | Not destroyed, but public access is blocked. |
| Lake County route | Court controls access to the case file. | Petition or automatic process may apply, depending on eligibility. |

Lake County Expungement Filings
For petition-based expungement, Minn. Stat. section 609A.03 requires a petition and filing fee unless waived or a no-petition path applies. The statewide District Court fee schedule lists criminal expungement at $310, with waiver possibilities for indigency or statutory grounds. Lake County filings go through District Court and Court Administration.

Restricted Lake County Criminal Records
Juvenile records, sealed records, expunged records, victim-identifying information, confidential identifiers, and some pending or sensitive matters may be unavailable online. MCRO also excludes certain case types and documents from remote access. The courthouse public terminal may show some records that are public but not online, while sealed and confidential records remain court-controlled.
